AMMAN TO PETRA BUS

The Amman to Petra bus is the cheapest option, it also takes the longest amount of amount of time.

The catch the Amman to Petra bus, you’ll need to be at South Bus Station. Depending where you are based in Amman, grab a taxi to the station. From a central location such as Rainbow Street, this shouldn’t cost more than 2-3JD (approx $3-4).

Taxi drivers are notorious for hiking the price, so ask the staff at your accommodation beforehand to find out how much it should be. If the taxi driver tries to charge you more, they are lying and wanting to screw you over. Regardless of what bull story they give you, it’s 3JD max, end of! Alternatively, catch an Uber.

It takes about 20 minutes to get to South Bus Station from Rainbow Street. When you arrive at the station, ask for the public bus to Petra. It looks like a white minivan.

The public buses in Jordan work as a collective style. This basically means that they won’t leave until they are full. Depending on the time of day, this can be a short or a long wait. The last public bus to Petra will leave by mid-afternoon, so ensure you are there in decent time.

If comfort is your thing, then the Amman to Petra bus probably isn’t the option for you. They are crowded and both passengers and their luggage will be packed in. There’s also no air con, just the windows and dodgy suspension. However, it’s cheap and certainly an experience!

The Amman to Petra bus takes about 4 hours with a single stop in the middle of nowhere to stretch your legs, go for a pee, get some fresh air etc.

The first price that the bus driver gave was for 10JD (approx $14). It IS NOT this much. It’s 6JD (approx $8.50) maximum, even then we paid 1JD more than we should have.

AMMAN TO PETRA BY CAR

Your two options to get to Petra from Amman by car are self-drive or hire a private transfer.

If you’re self-driving, then you’ll be glad to hear that the main roads are actually in pretty good nick in Jordan. The main roads have decent signage and outside of the cities, the traffic isn’t actually too bad. The word ‘erratic’ perfectly describes the Jordanian driving style. So if you’re self-driving from Amman to Petra just expect to be undertaken, the sudden braking from the car in front, 4 cars side-by-side on a 3-lane highway and cars overtaking into oncoming traffic. It can be a bit of a white knuckle ride.

If you’re not sure what car to hire, then if you’re just planning on driving from city to city, any regular car would be fine. However, IF you are considering combining your trip to Petra with a road trip out to the desert on a self-drive excursion to the Wadi Rum Desert (which I highly recommend by the way), then 100% you will need a 4×4.

Alternatively, let someone else take care of the driving for you and book a Petra full day private tour from Amman.
