Amman to Petra - Low Budget – Get the Public Bus

Using public transport is always my preferred method of travel when I’m travelling. Firstly, it’s always dirt cheap and if I’m not restricted to a time scale then often it’s more interesting to see some of the more off the beaten track and local places the bus meanders through. If people watching and meeting locals is your sport, then public transport is certainly the way to go.

The public bus departs from South Bus Station. Depending where you are based in Amman, grab a taxi to the station – from a central location such as Rainbow Street this shouldn’t cost more than 2-3JD (approx $3-4) .Check prices on Uber or with your accommodation before – if the taxi driver tries to charge you more, they are lying and basically wanting to screw you over. Regardless of what bull story they give you, it’s 3JD max, end of!

From Rainbow Street, it takes about 20 minutes to get to South Station. When you arrive at the station, ask for the public bus to Petra. It looks like a white minivan.

The public buses in Jordan work as a collective style, so they will leave when they are full. Depending on the time of day, this can be a short or a long wait. The last public bus to Petra will leave by mid-afternoon, so ensure you are there in decent time.

If comfort is your thing, then a public bus probably isn’t the option for you. They are crowded and both passengers and their luggage will be packed in, but it’s cheap and I think of it more of an experience so I don’t mind it. There’s also no air con, just the windows and dodgy suspension.

Amman to Petra takes about 4 hours to via public bus with a single stop in the middle of nowhere to stretch your legs, go for a pee, get some fresh air etc.

The first price that the bus driver gave was for 10JD (approx $14). It IS NOT this much. It’s 6JD (approx $8.50) maximum, even then we paid 1JD more than it should have been.

Amman to Petra - Mid Budget – Tourist Bus

The national tourist carrier in Jordan is by a bus company called JETT. The bus from Amman to Petra departs at 6.30am. Check out the latest time table, it’s also advisable at peak times to book in advance – spaces do sell out!

The main depot for JETT bus is near to 7th Circle. If you are staying in central Amman (e.g. Rainbow Street) then a taxi here should cost no more than 2-3JD (approx $3-4). Do NOT PAY MORE!

The JETT ticket office is next to the station. The JETT bus departs at 6.30am, getting to Petra about 4 hours later. A single ticket is 11JD (approx $15-16)

The JETT is reliable and comfortable way of getting from Amman to Petra (I used them to get from Petra to Aqaba when there was no public transport – a word of advice Friday’s are the Jordanian’s day off – so no public buses run!)

Amman to Petra - High Budget – Self Drive Car Hire

Depending on what car you choose, this can cost as little as 25JD  (approx $35) per day plus tax/insurance/liability/fuel. If there are a few of you going in the same direction, then this could potentially work out cheaper and more convenient than either of the other two options.

The main roads are actually in pretty good nick in Jordan and a regular car would be fine for this just driving from city to city. However, IF you are considering combining your trip to Petra with a road trip out to the desert on a self-drive excursion to Wadi Rum, then 100% you will need a 4×4.

The main roads have decent signage and outside of the cities, the traffic isn’t actually too bad.

Erratic is the perfect word to describe the native Jordanian and their driving style. On your journey from Amman to Petra just watch out for them undertaking, suddenly breaking or driving 4 cars side-by-side on a 3-lane highway.

BONUS OPTION - Book onto an Excursion

There are loads of options to combine different activites in Jordan which is the most effective way to make the most of your time here.

If you want all of the leg-work done for you then you could book a whole day private tour to Petra from Jordan

You could book a 2 night trip which includes Petra, Wadi Rum, The Dead Sea and the Red sea.

Or even a 3 night trip that includes a whole load more amazing sights in Jordan.
