1. Visit the Acropolis and Parthenon

Topping the list of Greek temples is the Acropolis of Athens. If anything, it’s probably at the top of your Athens bucket list. 

Step back in time and immerse yourself in the interesting tales of Greece’s ancient civilization. Discover the ancient ruins of this iconic Greek citadel including the Parthenon, Erechtheion, and Temple of Athena Nike. 

The Acropolis, the crown jewel of Greek temples, beckons you to experience its magic—an absolute must for every adventurer in Athens. Uncover the enduring legacy of this UNESCO World Heritage site, where history oozes out of every stone. 

I visited this site twice during my visit – once by myself, and once on a beat-the-crowds guided tour of the Acropolis. One word of advice – arrive early. The site opens at 8 am, and you’ll want to be one of the first in to enjoy the site without the crowds.

Visiting the Acropolis Museum helps piece together everything you would have seen at the Acropolis. As you explore its halls, you’ll encounter vast collections of ancient artefacts that were found on and around Acropolis Hill. 

The museum beautifully showcases the rich history of Athens, offering a glimpse into the fascinating world of ancient Greece. From intricately carved statues of the Caryatids to beautifully crafted friezes which came off the Parthenon, each artefact tells a unique story and builds a picture of how magnificent it the site would have once looked. 

The museum’s modern architecture seamlessly blends with the ancient treasures – it’s built on top of a ruin site! It’s also filled with immersive exhibits that show physical and digital models of what the Acropolis would have once looked like.  

3. See the Abandoned Ship at Zakynthos

Escape to the island of Zakynthos to see one of the Greek islands, most remarkable sights — the abandoned ship. 

Nestled along its rugged coastline, this weathered vessel stands sits on a white sandy bay, surrounded by speed cliffs on one side and the inviting blue sea on the other. 

The official name of this beach is Navagio Beach, although it’s also referred to as Shipwreck Beach and Smugglers Cove. You can only access it by boat.

The beach is famous for its timeworn hull and the skeletal frame of an abandoned ship. The MV Panagiotis is a 157-foot shipping vessel. It ran aground in 1980 and has been there ever since.

Set against the backdrop of Zakynthos’ outstanding azure waters and picturesque cliffs, the abandoned ship looks like it’s been plucked from a Pirates of the Caribbean movie. 

*For Summer 2023, you cannot set foot on the beach due to landslide risks which are being looked into.

4. Go Wine Tasting

Greece is synonymous with wine, so it would be a sacrilege not to sample a decent amount of it. Delve into the wine havens of Thessaly and Naoussa, nestled in the heart of Greece. 

Thessaly, adorned with a bountiful landscape, features vineyards that drape the undulating hillsides. This is where wine connoisseurs are transported to a world of indigenous grape varietals, immersing themselves in rich reds and crisp whites that eloquently express the region’s unique ecosystem. 

On the other hand, Naoussa offers bold and robust red wines. This is a great place to indulge in wines that emanate power and depth. 

5. Explore the Ruins of Delphi

If you love history and adventure, you should definitely visit the ruins of Delphi in Greece.

Among its notable attractions is the Temple of Apollo. It was built at the peak of Greek civilization and dates back to the 5th century BC. The temple was dedicated to Apollo Epicurius, the god of the sun and healing. Its purpose was to protect the city from plague and invasion.

The remnants of Delphi are filled with beautiful ruins scattered across sacred grounds. It was once believed to be the epicentre of the world!

8. Eat Traditional Greek Food

Wherever you are in Greece, you’ll be able to indulge in the tantalising world of traditional Greek cuisine, a culinary adventure that will leave your taste buds dancing with delight.

Here are some traditional Greek foods I recommend trying. I’m a vegetarian, so these are some of the foods I tried during my time in Greece.

• Feta Cheese: A crumbly textured, creamy and tangy white cheese

• Greek Salad: A refreshing combination of crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, Kalamata olives, and creamy feta cheese, dressed with olive oil, oregano and a hint of lemon

• Gyros: The traditional gyro is made from lamb or chicken. As a vegetarian, I was able to find roast vegetable versions, wrapped in warm pita bread with fresh vegetables and tangy tzatziki sauce.

• Olives: Greece’s renowned olives, available in various types and colours and are often a tasty accompaniment with a glass of wine

• Souvlakia: Traditionally these are meat skewers made from marinated pork or chicken. The vegetarian version is skewered vegetables including peppers and tomatoes, accompanied by pita bread, tzatziki sauce, and a side of fries or rice.

• Baklava: Sweet, sticky and often served as a dessert these flaky pastry layers, are sweetened with honey and filled with a delightful blend of ground nuts and spices.

9. Learn About Olive Oil

Greece is famous for its olive oil production, it’s an integral part of Mediterranean cuisine and culture. 

Olive oil is a staple in Greek gastronomy, renowned for its rich flavours and numerous health benefits. The volcano is still active, and you’ll be able to see steam rising out of the ground. You can also bathe in the nearby thermal waters.

Located a mere 90 minutes from Athens, is an absolute hidden gem in Greece. The areas of Xylokastro-Evrostini are one of Greece’s biggest kept secrets. 

I was almost in two minds about whether to include it in this list as unlike lots of other places in Greece, the whole area is quite untouched or tainted by tourism. 

Xylokastro-Evrostini looks like it belongs in the Swiss Alps – the stone houses are fitted with quaint fireplaces, and there are Christmas decorations up all year round. The area is dotted with meandering roads going through alpine trees, spring-flower meadows with snow-capped mountains and bright blue lakes. 

Because of the rugged mountainous terrain, this is a great place to enjoy outdoor pursuits, which include hiking to waterfalls, ATV, and kayaking on lakes. In the winter, the area receives a lot of snow so popular activities include skiing, skating and snowmobiling.

17. Explore the Old City of Rhodes
