THE BEST small group tours to Croatia, even for solo travellers!

So, you’re thinking of joining one of the small group tours to Croatia and not sure which one to go for? I know, right, there’s so much choice out there it’s difficult to know where to start.

Croatia is an amazing country, I’ve been twice already and I’d go back in an instant on any of these tours. As much as I love Croatia, I did find it challenging when I was ‘going solo’ and being reliant on public transport to get to some of the more off-the-beaten-track places and away from the crowds.

I also hate that fact that MOST tour companies wanted to penalise me for being a solo traveller with their ‘single supplement’. Like why should I have to pay more just because I travel alone? It’s so unethical and unfair.

So, I wanted to find a great tour company, with an amazing reputation that not only that went off the beaten track BUT didn’t screw me over for being a solo traveller and that would be with like minded travellers. If you’re having the same dilemma, then check out these three awesome group tours to Croatia.

So grab a brew, or your favourite tipple, and check out these great ideas.

What are small group tour companies REALLY like?

My idea of hell are those great big coaches, you know the ones, where you’re stuck in a group of 50 or more, drop you off and you’re headed about like cattle. I was not interested in spending my precious travel time like that.

So I started using small group tour companies, like G Adventures. I’ve loved all of their trips because you get to know the people you’re travelling with, they are often like-minded you’ll get to really connect and share the experience with, but you also a more efficient way to travel so you’ll get to experience so much more including more off-the-beaten-track places, the big tours don’t go to.

Why G Adventures?

G Adventures have set the bar insanely high when it comes to small group tours. True, there are plenty of other small group tour companies out there, I’ve tried loads of them.

However, with the standard set so high (I’ve not had a single shoddy tour with G Adventures), I’m always reluctant to use anyone else. Don’t just take my word for it, ask anyone who’s used G Adventures.

  • Offer the most genuine experiences
  • They work with local guides with insider knowledge, who know the region inside out.
  • They only offer small group tours, and they know how to do this well
  • They are ethically driven (check out their Planeterra foundation where they give back to the locals)
  • and my favourite.....they won't penalise you for being a solo traveller

Why choose a G Adventures Croatia tour?

Until fairly recently, if you mentioned Croatia, most people wouldn’t have heard of it. The Balkans war meant the country was a no-go zone for tourists and a pretty undesirable place to visit. Fast forward to today, and undoubtedly with some help from Game of Thrones, Croatia tops the list as one of the must-see places in Europe.

Although the infrastructure of the country is good, unless you hire a car, it can be tedious (in some cases near impossible) using public transport alone to get to some of the more off-the-beaten-track places. Which is why the G Adventures Croatia tours are a top choice.

Of course, you’ll get to visit the big draws like the stunningly beautiful islands and coves dotted all along the Adriatic coastline and beautiful medieval cities like Zagreb and the UNESCO listed Dubrovnik. But also there are a ton of things to see a little more off the beaten tourist track.

What are the negatives with a G Adventures Croatia group tour?

So, G Adventures group tours aren’t for everyone but this depends on your personality type.

For starters, if you’re a bit of a party animal, then you’d probably find G Adventures tours a bit on the tame side. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always had a great time with other people I’ve met on G Adventures but they ARE NOT really aimed at the party-type crowd.

If you’re looking at this style of travel with a great adventure tour company, then I’d totally recommend using Contiki instead. You’ll still get the same awesome tour, but there is a bigger emphasis on partying.

You can check out the full range of small group Croatia trips with Contiki here.

G Adventure Croatia Tour Group Size

G Adventures specialise in small group experiences. For the G Adventure Yacht tours, the maximum size of the group is 8 (this is limited by the space on the boat). For the land-based tour, the average group size was 12 people although the maximum can be up to 16 people.

What's the typical G Adventures age range?

There is no strict age limit on the G Adventures tours, however, under 18s must be accompanied by an adult. G Adventures attracts travellers who are wanting to experience the culture of destination with like-minded people regardless of age. Some of them are listed at 18-30 something, but even on those, it’s more of a mind-set.

Like I mentioned earlier, G Adventures tours are not aimed at party-animals, so even on the ‘younger’ tours, it’s never going to be wild.

I have been on G Adventures tours with 20-somethings right up to people who had retired!

What does the price include?

This will depend on which of the tour you choose but typically it’s your accommodation, some of your meals, the guide, transportation and entrance to attractions.

There are always bolt-on options during the trips so you can choose whether or not you want to do an activity or would rather have free time to explore on your own.

Are G Adventures tours ok for solo travellers? I hate being penalised for travelling alone.

Yes, and this is one of the things I love about G Adventures, they won’t penalise you for being a solo traveller. In most cases, they will just buddy you up in the accommodation with another traveller of the same gender.

If you are really adamant about having your own space, then you can pay extra for it, but this is purely optional and you’ll have to request this option at the time of booking.

How much money do I need to take on a G Adventures Croatia tour?

Naturally, this is going to vary on your spending style. If you want fancy bottles of wine with every meal, then sure you will spend more.

You need spending money for any additional meals or optional activities you want to do ($20/30 maximum a day) and then some extra as a tip for the crew ($50 maximum).

I'm a vegetarian/ lactose intolerant/ have a nut allergy, will I be ok eating with the group?

Yes! I’m a vegetarian so I have first-hand experience of this and my food request has always been met. Make sure you state this and make it known at the time of booking so they know to cater to your dietary needs.

At the beginning of the tour, they will always ask and check so they know exactly what each person’s needs are.
