7 Days in Malta – Know Before You Go

Before I go into how to spend a week in Malta, here are a couple of useful bits of information if you’re in the planning stages of your trip.

Getting To Malta

The best way to get to Malta is by flying into Malta International Airport, located just outside of Valletta. The airport boasts numerous international connections from places like London, Rome, and Amsterdam.

If you’re looking for a more leisurely journey, you can also arrive by ferry from Sicily or the Greek islands – this is a great option for seeing more of the region during your trip.

Getting Around Malta

Malta is a small country and getting around is easy. The best way to get around Malta is by public bus and ferry, which both have regular and reliable service, plus are cheap to use. This itinerary is doable via public transport. There’s also the option for the Malta hop-on-hop-off bus – there are two different route options.

If you’re planning on visiting the places in this itinerary as a Malta road trip, take note that driving in any of the cities, particularly in and around Valletta, can be busy and parking can be an issue.

Day 1 – Valletta and the Three Cities

Your one-week in Malta itinerary starts in Valletta. Spend the morning and early afternoon exploring the beautiful streets taking in the city’s history. In the afternoon, take the ferry across the Grand Harbour to continue your exploration in an area known as the Three Cities.

City of Valletta

The capital of Malta is a city steeped in history. It is known for its cultural and architectural heritage. It’s also a designated UNESCO World Heritage City. It’s a good idea to choose a hotel in Valletta to make the most of your time here.

Valletta wasn’t always the capital and most of what you see dates back to the 16th century – you’ll visit the original capital later in this 1 week itinerary. Malta hosts a variety of architectural styles, however, many of the buildings in Valletta reflect the Baroque style of architecture.

The City Walls of Valletta showcase a bridge on top, made of brick stone
City Walls of Valletta

On this itinerary, you’ll have less than one day in Valletta. Some of the best things to do in Valletta is admire the historic grid-like streets, fortifications, churches, palaces and plazas that have been preserved since then. You can take a walk through the winding streets or take a guided tour of Valletta to get an inside look into the city’s storied past.

Unmissable landmarks include the City Walls and Gate, the Grandmaster Palace, Upper Barrakka Gardens and Lower Barrakka Gardens – of the two, I preferred the Upper Barrakka Garden as it gave a better view over the Grand Harbour –  as well as Fort St Elmo.

Valletta oozes with history, and although you can easily wander about by yourself, one of the most efficient ways to see the highlights and understand what you’re looking at is by taking a Valletta guided walking tour.

Fort St Elmo

One of my favourite places in Valletta was Fort St Elmo. It dominates the tip of the peninsula and sits at the entrance to the Grand Harbour.

A large portion of the fortress has been impeccably restored, with artillery stations still visible and a number of impressive battlements. From the battlements, there were breathtaking views out to the harbour and its other peninsulas.

Inside, you’ll find a well-curated museum that gives an incredible insight into Malta’s turbulent past. Through artefacts, photographs and illustrations, it detailed the journey that this small island nation had been through.

The atmosphere inside was sombre yet awe-inspiring, as I contemplated what might have gone on here during the times of great strife and conflict. It left me feeling incredibly moved by my visit and inspired to learn more about Malta’s long and storied history.

The Three Cities

The Three Cities of Malta, Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua are perhaps one of the most photogenic areas in Malta. All three cities offer an array of colourful streets, unique architecture, and quaint restaurants – all connected by charming alleyways.

They each come with their own distinct atmosphere, from Vittoriosa’s breathtaking waterfront views to Cospicua’s narrow passageways lined with brick buildings.

By far, one of my favourite areas was the beautiful streetscapes in Birgu. Birgu also goes by the name of Vittoriosa. Strolling down these streets, I felt almost as if I had been transported back in time. It’s filled with gorgeously quaint tiny alleyways that can be found nestled between colourful buildings. I spend at least an hour pursuing and photographing this area.

Everywhere I looked there were small details that made me appreciate the unique beauty of this area even more. This photogenic area really is one of the most beautiful places in Malta.

Optional: Tarxien Ruins or The Hypogeum of Ħal Saflieni

If you’re a fan of ruins and UNESCO monuments, then two of Malta’s most famous ruins are located just outside Cospicua; the Megalithic Temples of Tarxien Temples and the Hypogeum of Ħal Saflieni.

If you’ve read my blog for a while, you’ll know I’m a little bit obsessed with temples and ruins, so I tried to pack in as many as I could during my time in Malta.

Tarxien Temples is a site of great historical significance and one of Malta’s most iconic prehistoric sites. With intricate stone carvings depicting animal figures, symbols, and other designs.

Alternatively, the Hypogeum of Ħal Saflieni is an underground burial chamber and temple complex that is also worth visiting if you get the opportunity. Due to its popularity tickets for this site are highly sought after, so be sure to book your tour in advance!

Day 2 – Marsaxlokk and Southern Malta

The second day of this Malta 1 week itinerary takes you to the south of the island, and one of the most charming fishing villages, Marsaxlokk. Whittle away a leisurely morning here before stopping off to see the rock formations of the Blue Grotto and the cliffside ruins of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra.

Marsaxlokk

Marsaxlokk is a small fishing village located on the southern coast of Malta and it’s an absolute must-see for any visitor to the island. The waterfront of Marsaxlokk is lined with bright, colourful boats called  Luzzus, that bob in the shallow harbour, making for a beautiful sight against the glistening turquoise waters.

Take a leisurely stroll along the promenade, before enjoying lunch at one of the eateries right by the harbour. There are even souvenir shops selling everything from traditional handcrafted items to nautical memorabilia.

I spent ages photographing the traditional boats, mesmerised by the vibrant colours – each one representing a different village on the island. One thing to look out for is the eyes on the bows of each boat. I learnt that these are known as the eyes of Osiris, which is a traditional amulet painted onto each traditional Maltese boat to protect the fishermen while at sea.

The Blue Grotto

The Blue Grotto is one of the most photographed places in Malta and a must-see for anyone visiting the south of the island

This stunning natural rock formation is best seen from the sea, so take a boat trip to really appreciate its beauty up close. As you’ll get to skim across the blue crystal clear waters, as your guide points out various formations and tells you facts about geology here.

One of the easiest ways to get around the highlights is on a guided full-day tour of the south of Malta. This tour stops at Marsaxlokk, Blue Grotto, and Qrendi.

Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra

I remember my first visit to Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra when I visited Malta years ago. I remember the ruins clearly, with the enormous stones propped up forming a chamber perched on the edge of a cliff.

One thing I didn’t remember (I don’t think I was even bilt then) was the museum! The museum added a unique dimension to the experience with the 4D cinema experience included in the price of admission, it brought the ruins to life and really helped picture together what the rock structure I was looking at may have looked like.

The site itself dates back all the way to 3200 BC, making it one of the oldest existing structures in Europe. It is also quite unique as it is composed of two temples – Ħaġar Qim (meaning ‘standing stones’) and Mnajdra (meaning ‘temple’).

The site includes amazing megalithic structures which are still being investigated today by archaeologists who constantly uncovering evidence about the ancient civilization that used to live on Malta.

As a huge fan of ancient ruins, I crammed in as many ruin sites as I could during my time in Malta.

If you’re into ancient sites, then I recommend this Southern Malta Prehistoric Temples tour.

Day 3 – Mdina, Rabat and Dingli Cliffs

The third day of this 7 days Malta guide visits the historic city of Mdina. Spend the morning wandering the medieval streets of Malta’s ancient capital before heading to neighbouring Rabat. Spend time exploring St Pauls’s Catacombs before heading to the highest point in Malta, the Dingli Cliffs for a sunset walk.

Mdina

If you’re planning on visiting Malta, Mdia is a must!

Mdina is Malta’s original walled capital city and is known as ‘The Silent City’. It is a historic city full of photogenic narrow streets, stunning views, museums, and the beautiful Mdina Cathedral. It was given its nickname ‘the Silent City’ because it resembled a ghost town after the new capital was moved to modern-day Vittoriosa in 1530.

Wander through the winding alleys and admire the beautiful architecture which has been preserved since Mdina was its capital. The city can be accessed by a drawbridge that goes over a ditch formerly used to protect the city from enemy forces.

There are several viewpoints along the city walls where you can enjoy beautiful views over the island of Malta.

I adored exploring the ancient streets and alleys of Mdina. However, I’d recommend arriving early to get the best out of your visit. Anytime after about 11, and the crowds are starting to form.

Getting there early means you will be able to enjoy the city without the crowds and get the best photos without anyone in them, You’ll also get to experience the peacefulness of Mdina before it starts bustling with people.

It’s quite easy to explore Mdina as it’s a relatively small city. I had walked around the whole city in less than two hours – and that includes the time I stopped to take photos.

If you’re interested in finding out more about the history of Mdina and neighbouring Rabat, then you might like this walking tour of the two cities.

Rabat

Rabat is like the calmer little sister to Mdina. True, it’s not quite as charming, but it’s still filled with some pretty little alleyways. I used Rabat to escape to when the crowds got too big in Mdina.

It’s a lot smaller than Mdina, however, there are still plenty of things to see in Rabat.

One of the must-see attractions in Rabat is St Pauls’s Catacombs. These extensive underground tunnels have been around since Roman times.

The buildings at the streets of Rabat feature brown brick walls, ironwork doors, and plants
Rabat Streets

If you’re a fan of ancient ruins, history or slightly off-beat tourism then I 100% recommend a visit. If you’re claustrophobic or hate the dark, then this definitely isn’t for you!

You don’t have to go on a tour, although guided tours are available. The catacombs are each numbered and have an information board outside each explaining the type of burial, the religion, and any features to look out for.

Visiting the catacombs was one of my highlights in Malta, and although you could see them within an hour, somehow, I spent about three hours here perusing over everything – but I’m a huge fan of temples and ruins so this was right up my street!

Take a torch, and wear something you don’t mind getting dirty as some of the catacombs involve a bit of crawling.

Dingli Cliffs

From Mdina head over to the Dingli Cliffs – they are only 5km away.

You’ve probably noticed that Malta is fairly flat. It’s not known for its peaks, however, the Dingli Cliffs are the highest place on the island. Sitting at nearly 230m and the best place to head for spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea.

I suggest heading here late in the afternoon as it’s the ideal setting for late afternoon and sunset hikes. There are several trails around here and the area is scattered with small coves and beaches, making it a great spot to explore.

Day 4 – Mellieha and Northern Malta

Continue your Malta in 7 days itinerary in the north of the island. Start at the coastal village of Mellieha. If you’re travelling with your family, or even if you’re young at heart, head across to Popeye Village. Today is a day for enjoying the beaches. If that’s too relaxed then make the most of Malta’s great adventure sports scene.

Mellieha

Mellieha is home to some of Malta’s most stunning beaches, from the secluded coral bay of Mellieha Bay to the golden sands of Golden Bay and Ghajn Tuffieha Bay Beach. All three are perfect for swimming and sunbathing.

For a more active day out, visit Għadira Nature Reserve, a vast area of sand dunes and salt lakes with an abundance of bird life. With plenty of trails through the reserve, it’s easy to spend the day exploring this protected area.

From the top, the view showcases colorful houses, blue sea water, green land, and the church at Mellieha Bay

Popeye Village

Popeye Village is an amusement park that was the set for the 1981 live-action Popeye film starring Robin Williams. Made up of a replica village with a variety of cottages, shops and attractions, it is great for families or anyone looking to relive their childhood memories.

You can also take a tour of the iconic sets used in the film.

Optional: Adventure Sports

Malta is a paradise for adrenaline junkies and adventure sports enthusiasts. You can go cliff climbing, explore caves and ravines on a canyoning trip or abseil down a sheer rock face. Alternatively, take an ATV ride around the countryside or take to the sea on a kayak or SUP.

Via Ferrata in Malta

I recently visited Malta and had the opportunity to do a Via Ferrata experience. Via Ferrata is essentially a guided rock climbing experience, where steel rungs and footpaths are installed on a steep incline so that even beginner climbers can safely access and explore high places.

The view from the cliff was outstanding and I could see for miles around.

Day 5 – Comino and the Blue Lagoon

Day 5 of your one week Malta itinerary stays around the top of the island. This time you’ll be hopping over to Cominio, the smallest island in the Archelapago. Comino is famous for the Blue Lagoon which is the focus for today.

Comino

Comino is easy to get to from mainland Malta. The island is tiny: 3km long and 1 km wide. Despite that, there are quite a few things to do here.

The island has only one small town, the rest still retains its natural beauty. It’s home to several species of birds and other wildlife, walking trails and a few monuments.

On the island, it’s worth taking a short hike up to St Nicholas Tower as well as visiting the ancient Chapel of St Mary.

The main draw here, and Comino’s most famous attraction, is the Blue Lagoon.

One of the most convenient ways to visit Comino, The Blue Lagoon and Gozo on this full-day island hopping tour.

Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is one of the most famous attractions in Malta. You can take a boat from Comino or hop on a tour from mainland Malta

There are no prizes for guessing how it got its name. If you visit on a sunny day, it looks nearly neon blue. The day I saw it, there were some clouds in the sky, so it wasn’t quite as vibrant. Despite that, it was still stunning!

The clear blue waters do look inviting – although as inviting as it looked during my April visit, for me it was just a bit too cold to get in. I’m a wimp when it comes to cold water!

If you’re not bothered by the cold, or visiting at a warmer time, then the shallow lagoon is perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and even kayaking!

To make sure you get the full experience, it’s worth arriving early. There are numerous boat tours that depart daily from Comino, Gozo and mainland Malta as a full day trip.

The easiest way to visit the Blue Lagoon is on a full-day tour from mainland Malta.

Day 6 & 7 – Gozo

The final two days of your 7 day Malta itinerary happen on Gozo Island. Start in Victoria, the island’s capital and explore the Citadel. Visit some of the island’s iconic landmarks including the Inland Sea, Calypso’s Cave, Salt Pans of Xwejni and the UNESCO Ġgantija temples.

Victoria and the Citadel

Start in Victoria and the Citadel. This was one of my favourite places on Gozo. Unlike the walled city of Mdina, the walled fortification here is massive! I spent a huge chunk of time getting lost in the myriad of alleyways.

The fortress dates back to the 16th century. You can stroll through the narrow streets, stopping every few steps to look at the medieval architecture or join a guided tour that will let you explore more of the landmark.

Ġgantija Temples

The Ġgantija Temples are one of the oldest freestanding structures in the world. They are about 5000 years and located near the Xagħra village.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site features two temples made from giant megaliths, which is how it got its name; Ġgantija meaning giantess. The structure is composed of two temple complexes that were built during different periods and are surrounded by a large boundary wall with several entrances.

While you’re in the village, don’t miss the windmill!

The Ta’ Kola Windmill is an important historical landmark. It was originally constructed in 1725 and underwent a rebuild in the 1780s. Since 1992 it has been open to visitors as a museum with artefacts and information about its history.

Calypso’s Cave and Tal-Mixta Cave

Both of these caves are located near Ramla Bay on the north coast of Gozo. Both of the caves overlook the golden sands of Ramla Beach.

Calypso’s Cave is famous for inspiring Homer to write one of his most famous works – The Odyssey.  According to legend, it was here that the nymph Calypso held the Greek hero Odysseus captive for seven years. Today, the cave still retains an air of mystique with its jagged rock formations.

You can not go inside Calypso Cave due to its instability. However, there are viewing platforms next to it that look out over the bay below. You can enter Tal-Mixta Cave, here you’ll find a frame-like opening in the rock looking down on the beach and countryside below.

Salt Pans at Xwejni

The Salt Pans near Xwejni village show the traditional salt harvesting process which hasn’t changed much for hundreds of years.

You can visit the salt pans, and carefully walk along the raised borders, or take a boat tour and view it from the sea.

Getting Around Gozo

Getting around Gozo is easy and there are a few convenient options.

For those looking for an adrenaline rush, a full-day ATV tour is the perfect way to explore the island and its beautiful sights.

The Gozo Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus is also a great way to get around with its various routes that cover all the main attractions of Gozo.

You can also hire a TukTuk and driver for the day for more personalized trips and it can often take you to some of the lesser-known spots. Or take a Jeep Tour of Gozo.

Where to Stay in Malta?

In this Malta travel guide, you’ll be glad to hear that you won’t want to be packing up and moving every day. This itinerary is designed so you have either 2 or 3 nights in each place. I give hotel suggestions on the best places to stay.

Nights 1, 2, and 3 – Valletta

Because the island is so small, base yourself in Valletta, or one of the surrounding bays such as Sliema or St Julians. From here, you’ll be able to get everywhere on the south of the Island easily.

Top Accommodation Pick – Hotel 66 Saint Paul’s & Spa, Valletta

This adorable hotel features a rooftop terrace, a spa and an outdoor pool with city views. It’s centrally located next to all the best attractions in Valletta.

This property is located a short distance from attractions and offers a daily buffet-style continental breakfast.

Nights 4 & 5 – Mellieha

Move to the north of the island and base yourself in Mellieha or one of the surrounding bays. This makes it easier to explore areas at this end of the island as well as visit the Blue Lagoon on nearby Comino Island.

Top Accommodation Pick – Lure Hotel & Spa (Adults Only)

This Adults Only hotel is located 1.5 km from Mellieha Bay Beach. It features an indoor pool, spa facilities, a year-round outdoor pool and a sun terrace.

Rooms are spacious and come with air conditioning, a flat-screen TV with satellite channels, a minibar, and a coffee machine. Some rooms have a balcony others have a city view.

Nights 6 & 7 – Gozo

Stay on Gozo for the final two nights. Although you could see the highlights in one very rushed day, Gozo has a much more relaxed vibe, so go slow and take your time. I suggest staying in the capital of the island, Victoria.

Top Accommodation Pick – Duke Boutique Hotel
