During my recent visit to this vibrant city, I got to experience an array of fabulous Christmas markets ranging from the iconic market in Town Hall Square, right through to the risque offerings at Santi Pauli.

From savouring mulled wine and roasted chestnuts to browsing artisan stalls for unique holiday gifts, every Christmas market in Hamburg offers an enchanting winter atmosphere that perfectly captures the magic of the season.

Join me as I recount my experiences and share tips to help you make the most of your own holiday adventure in Hamburg.

Best Christmas Markets in Hamburg

If you’re planning to visit Hamburg, Germany at Christmas, you’ll be spoilt for choice for Christmas markets.  From traditional markets to full-on risque, Hamburg offers a wide variety of options for everyone.

Here are some of the best Christmas markets in Hamburg that you shouldn’t miss:

When Do Hamburg Christmas Markets Start?

The Christmas Markets in Hamburg typically start in late November. 

The City Hall Market is scheduled to run from November 27, 2023, through to December 23, 2023. The markets tend to operate from 11:00 am or midday. Closing times vary depending on the day of the week.

Other markets, such as the one on Jungfernstieg, also follow a similar schedule. 

If you’re planning to visit the Hamburg Christmas Markets, late November to late December would be the ideal time.

Hamburg Christmas Markets Guide

This Christmas market in Hamburg guide delves into what I think is the very best offering in the city. 

Read on to discover where to indulge in a magical winter experience amidst twinkling lights, aromatic mulled wine, and a variety of artisan stalls.

Hamburg City Hall Christmas Market

The Hamburg Rathaus Christmas Market is the most popular and largest Christmas market in Hamburg. It is located right in front of the town hall providing a beautiful backdrop to the festive stalls. It takes up the whole of Rathausmarkt Square.

Here you will find traditional German Christmas items such as hand-crafted decorations, toys, and candles. Indulge in some tasty treats like roasted chestnuts, gingerbread, and mulled wine while enjoying live music performances.

This market is popular, and in the evenings and weekends, although it had a great atmosphere, I found it incredibly crowded. My favourite time for visiting this market and enjoying it at a more leisurely pace was during mid-afternoon on a weekday. 

St Pauli Hamburg Christmas Market

Experience the hottest Christmas market in Hamburg! 

Here, the traditional Christmas atmosphere blends with the lively entertainment of Santa Pauli. The adults-only Christmas market makes for a sizzling and sensual experience. 

Enjoy a cup of Glühwein while browsing gift stalls for unique and spicy Christmas presents with a slightly kinky theme.

The Reeperbahn area comes alive at night, which is reflected in the opening hours of the Santa Pauli Market.

This is probably one of the most quirky Christmas markets I’ve ever visited, but if you’re looking for something different and a bit daring, this is the place to be! 

If you want to watch any of the shows, then expect huge crowds. I managed to get a spot near the front so I had a great view of the stage. If you’re standing at the back, it would be difficult to see what’s happening on stage. 

City Christmas Market

Located along the main shopping streets in Hamburg, this market is perfect for those looking to combine their Christmas shopping with a festive atmosphere. 

You’ll find stalls along Mönckeberg and Spitalerstrasse as well as nearby Gerhard-Hauptmann-Platz square. There’s also another smaller Christmas market at the nearby St. Petri church.

Here you’ll find traditional wooden huts selling everything from Christmas decorations to handcrafted gifts and delicious treats. 

I passed through these markets quite a few times, and they were always much quieter than the main one at the Town Hall. If you’re not a fan of crowds, then I recommend hanging out at these markets. 

Jungfernstieg Xmas Market

On Jungfernstieg Boulevard, next to the Inner Alster Lake, you’ll find elegant white stalls offering a variety of items. From hot drinks and roasted nuts to home goods, there’s something for everyone. 

Some stalls display jewellery and handicrafts, while others tempt you with delicious fresh baked goods.

Although all the Christmas Markets in Hamburg have a real focus on food, I thought the Jungfernstieg Christmas Market had a much higher ratio of food vs gifts. That’s not a bad thing! You could literally start at one end and eat your way along it. 

I visited this market once during the daytime, it was relaxed and easy to peruse all the stalls. At nighttime it’s a different story, however, queues for food and drink weren’t that bad. 

Marché de Noël at Stadthöfe

Nestled off the conventional path, these quaint round huts with their copper roofs and matching mulled wine cups often go unnoticed. Amidst the glistening Christmas trees and the comforting warmth of wood chips beneath your feet, the Marché de Nöel exudes a tranquil ambience.

Indulge in the delights of white and red mulled wine, hot cocoa, and even champagne at this charming and intimate Christmas market. Meandering through various arcades, you’ll encounter smaller markets boasting enticing food stalls and inviting lounge areas.

This was one of my favourite Hamburg Christmas markets with its intimate and ambient atmosphere. It was a great place to recharge and get away from the bustle before heading back out in the crowds.

About the Stadthöfe

The Stadthöfe project aims to revitalize a group of former administrative buildings constructed between 1888 and 1916. 

These buildings previously served as the headquarters of the Nazi secret police, the Gestapo, from 1933 to 1943. During that time, basement cells were used to torture opponents of the regime. 

Today, this building has been transformed into a new urban quarter that features apartments, a luxury hotel, restaurants, shops, and office space.

Maritime Christmas Markets

At the Fleetinsel Christmas market, just a short walk from Hamburg’s iconic St. Michael’s Church, you’ll be greeted with a maritime vibe. This cosy market on a small ‘island’ between the Alster and Elbe rivers offers mulled wine, delicious treats, and a chance to admire two historic ships. 

The HafenCity Christmas market at Überseequartier is a blend of modern architecture and traditional winter cheer, with plenty of food, drinks, and gift stalls. 

This unique setting combines historic ships and modern architecture, creating a special atmosphere.

🎄 Gänsemarkt Christmas Market

A smaller market is Gänsemarkt Square.  Try a cup of Feuerzangenbowle, a traditional Christmas drink made by setting a rum-soaked sugarloaf on fire and letting it melt into mulled wine. 

It can get crowded in the evenings, so visit mid to late afternoon for a more relaxing experience.

🎄 Scandinavian Christmas Village

Hamburg’s only castle blends into this enchanting Christmas world.

Take the red S-Bahn lines S2 or S21 to Bergedorf. The Bergedorfer Weihnachtsmarkt features a unique Scandinavian Christmas village with Swedish-red wooden huts with cosy seating, crackling campfires, and the real “Santa’s Home” amidst a fir forest.

🎄 Blankenese Christmas Market

Pretty Blankenese, known for its steep streets, charming fishermen’s houses, and towering villas above the river Elbe, is often praised for its Mediterranean vibe. 

In winter, Blankenese is just as enchanting. You’ll find it opposite S-Bahn station Blankenese. 

This cosy Christmas market features traditional eggnog, mulled wine, and a variety of snacks alongside German festive classics and Tuscan specialities.

Hamburg Christmas Parade

Advent Saturdays in Hamburg’s city centre are enlivened by colourful Christmas Parades. They take place at 2 pm and 5 pm.

This festive tradition features dancing angels, elves, reindeer, vibrant floats, and Santa Claus himself, spreading yuletide joy throughout the city.

The parades commence from Mönckebergstrasse in front of SATURN.

Hamburg Christmas Market Flying Santa at Rathaus

Look out for high-wire performer Rambo Bügler, dressed as Santa. He’s been soaring over the Town Hall Square Christmas market in Hamburg in a sparkling sleigh for the past 20 years.

Santa flies three times daily at 4 pm, 6 pm and 8 pm. He zooms across a wire rope from the Alsterfleet’s large Christmas tree to the City Hall’s eastern wing stopping mid-way to give a Christmas Message (although it’s in German).

Winter Wonderland at Strand Pauli

For a truly unique experience, visit Strand Pauli’s Winter Wonderland. Located on the banks of the Elbe River. During the summer Strand Pauli is home to a city beach, in the winter season it transforms into a festive oasis with a cosy atmosphere.

Enjoy curling, and warming up by the fire pits while sipping on hot mulled wine. This is the perfect spot to relax and take in the beautiful views of the Elbe River during Christmas time.

You can also enjoy a delicious fondue in their heated Hacienda. Make a reservation well in advance, as this is a popular spot during the holiday season.

Ice Skating at Planten un Blomen

For a fun and active winter activity, head to Planten un Blomen Park for ice skating at the EisArena. The park transforms into a winter wonderland with an ice rink surrounded by festive lights and decorations. 

Skate under the open sky while listening to Christmas music and enjoying the beautiful scenery of this popular park. After your skate, warm up with a hot chocolate or a mulled wine from one of the nearby Christmas markets.

This ice rink boasts a surface area of 4,300 square meters, making it one of the largest in Europe. On Fridays and Saturdays, a live DJ sets the perfect mood.

Self-Guided Hamburg Christmas Lights Tour

There are plenty of places to see the stunning Christmas lights in Hamburg. Here are some of the best spots.

• Traditional Gänsemarkt with its gingerbread-style houses
• The white tents at Jungfernstieg
• Historic Christmas Market at Rathausmarkt and the flying Santa Claus
• Landungsbrücken by the harbour and the facade of the Elbphilharmonie
• Wander the harbour and docks and see various ferries, tugboats, and barges donned with lights and Christmas trees
• In addition to the usual flashy lights of Santa Pauli, you’ll discover them intertwined with traditional Christmas lighting, creating a captivating blend of illumination.
• Explore the 47-hectare city park called “Planten un Blomen” and the EisArena Hamburg
• The Mönckebergstraße is brightly illuminated with overhead decorations

Take a Harbour Cruise

Step in from the cold and explore Hamburg’s iconic landmarks, including the impressive Elbe Philharmonic Hall.

Don’t miss a boat trip through the bustling Hamburg harbour, one of the largest ports in the world. See the Hamburg skyline from a different perspective and discover the historic Speicherstadt district.

Eat Your Way Around the City

Hamburg has no shortage of great places to eat. Here are two fabulous places worth putting on your radar.

Mimosa Brunch Club

The Sweet Café is a place dedicated to mimosas, offering bottomless crémant and various fruit juice options. Not only can you enjoy delicious drinks like the Espresso Martini, but there are also non-alcoholic options available.

Indulge in mouthwatering waffles, generously filled sandwiches, or enormous sharing platters. 

Chingu 

Chingu St. Pauli offers a vibrant and immersive dining experience just steps away from the Reeperbahn. With its colourful decor, lucky cat decorations, and continuous K-pop music, Chingu is not just a restaurant in the evenings, it transforms into a karaoke hotspot.

Watch a Burlesque Show

Step in from the cold and immerse yourself in a Burlesque Show.  There are many opportunities to experience tantalizing shows in Hamburg.

I visited the Bunny Burlesque Show in the Santi Pauli district. The small intimate venue draped in red velvet with plush seating and ambient lighting set the tone for an unforgettable evening.

Bar Hop at Reeperbahn

The Santi Pauli district offers a diverse range of drinking establishments, from elegant cocktail bars to lively clubs with pulsating music.

The Weingarten 26 is a peaceful oasis amidst the vibrant neighbourhood. It used to be a wasteland for 20 years. The historic façade of the Wilhelminian-style building still remains and today it’s an open-air bar. 

Ride the Hop-on Hop-off Bus

For a comprehensive tour of Hamburg’s top attractions, hop on the Hamburg Hop-on Hop-off Bus. This double-decker bus takes you to all the must-see sights in the city, including St. Michael’s Church, Town Hall Square, and Alster Lake.

You can choose between different routes and even enjoy an evening tour with live English commentary.

Where to Stay in Hamburg

Villa Viva is a new hotel located in Hamburg, between the main station and the Deichtorhallen. 

What sets Villa Viva apart is its social mission. As a social business of Viva con Agua in collaboration with Heimathafen Hotels, the majority of profits from the hotel go towards water projects.

Getting to Hamburg

Hamburg is well connected. The easiest way to get to the city is by flying to Hamburg Airport (HAM).

To reach the city centre from the airport you can choose to travel by taxi, train (S-Bahn), or bus. The most convenient option was by train – this is what I did. 

You can also arrive in Hamburg by train. The city has four railway stations.

Getting Around Hamburg

Navigating Hamburg is a breeze thanks to its extensive and efficient public transport system. The U-Bahn (Underground) and S-Bahn (Suburban train) networks connect all corners of Hamburg. 

To get an idea about the layout of the city and to visit all of Hamburg’s top attractions, consider doing the Hop-On Hop-Off bus tour which stops at the main places of interest.
