What to Wear in Petra, Jordan

If you’re reading this article, you’re probably wondering what should I wear to travel to Petra. Great question!

I spend two full days, plus an evening exploring Petra archaeological site. If you’re planning on travelling to Petra, you need to dress appropriately and respectfully.

Jordan is one of the more liberal countries in the Middle East, but it’s still important to dress conservatively, especially for women.

Also, Petra is a ruin site, so you need to wear comfortable and practical clothing that will allow you to explore easily.

What Are Traditional Clothes in Petra

Petra is an ancient city where the Bedouin people used to live. They were nomads who moved around the desert. Petra’s traditional clothing were made for the desert weather.

For men and women, the robes were referred to “throbes”. Men tended to dress in white or beige, and wore headscarves called “kufeya“. Women wore more colourful dresses with embroidery and jewellery.

Now, most people in Petra wear modern clothes, but sometimes you can see traditional Bedouin clothes at festivals and events.  You’ll also find these traditional Petra gowns for sale in the souvenir shops around the area.

What to Wear in Petra, Jordan – By Gender

If you’re wondering what should tourists wear in Petra, there’s no strict dress code – but it’s important to respect the local culture

Although you can, in theory, wear whatever you like as a female tourist, be mindful that women in Jordan, tend not to show much skin. If you choose to wear revealing clothing, you might attract unwanted attention.

When you visit Petra, ideally, women should cover up their shoulders, arms, and knees. Men have more flexibility in their attire.

What to Wear in Petra as a Woman

Even though Jordan is a very liberal country compared to other places in the Middle East, it’s still very conservative compared to the Western world.

Although there aren’t strict laws about what you should wear as a woman in Jordan, it’s more important to respect their culture, and as a woman, this means to dress conservatively.

Below, I’ve listed some of the clothes that I packed when I visited Jordan and were perfect for exploring the Petra ruin site.

Harem Pants or Midi Skirt

I found that wearing harem pants, or if you prefer a midi skirt or any alternative that covers the knees, provided the same level of comfort and practicality as my regular go-to gym leggings.

Personally, I found baggy gym pants or joggers with elasticated ankles to be incredibly useful. I could adjust their length by rolling them down in the morning for cooler temperatures and rolling them up to knee length during the afternoon heat.

Maxi Dress and Wide-Legged Trousers

For a stylish and appropriate look in Petra, consider opting for maxi dresses, skirts that fall below the knee, or wide-legged trousers.

I recommend choosing lightweight and flowy fabrics, especially during the summer months. While shorts can be worn, it’s advised to go for knee-length, or just above-the-knee options rather than the ultra-short versions.

I’d totally avoid any type of shorts where you can see your bum cheeks hanging out the bottom – keep those for the beach.

Oversize T-Shirts & Shirts

While cropped t-shirts that show the midriff are a staple in my standard travel wardrobe, they’re not really suitable for the Middle East.

Instead, I chose oversized shirts and t-shirts that have a “boyfriend style” with baggy sleeves that can be rolled up in the heat. Sometimes, I even opted for men’s t-shirts because I liked the print designs.

The oversized shirts can be accessorised with a cute belt or necklace to make them look more feminine.

Leggings

Wearing leggings in Petra is another great choice. I opted for these on one of my days in the archaeological park. Gym wear gives me freedom of movement and was super comfortable.

Opting for lightweight and quick-drying leggings helped me stay cool in the desert heat. I paired them with an oversized t-shirt that covered my hips.

Sports Bras

I’m a huge fan of sports bras, I just find them more comfortable compared to regular bras with wires and straps digging in. Also, it stopped the problem of having a wayward bra strap on show. Unlike in Europe where exposed bra straps are no big deal, as a cultural thing in Jordan, you’re best to be mindful of this.

A sports bra provided me with full coverage and helped me avoid any unwanted attention. Overall, they just made me feel a bit more comfortable as a solo female traveller.

Sports bras not only offer practical benefits such as added comfort, and support, but they are even a convenient place to stash emergency money – I stash a little bit in the side of mine if I know I’m going to be somewhere – such as busy tourist spots – where pickpockets would be.

Scarf

Being someone who easily gets cold, I have a bit of an obsession with scarves. They are incredibly versatile and have been one of my favourite travel accessories. Whether I needed a makeshift curtain in a dorm room or some extra warmth on a chilly plane due to the air conditioning, a scarf always came to the rescue.

Another plus is that scarves are a great accessory to tie as a turban for protecting your head from the sun, as well as wearing in photos.

A Poncho or Shawl

For an upgrade from the scarf, consider opting for a poncho or shawl. These versatile pieces not only serve as additional cover-ups but also double as blankets for chilly mornings.

During my visit to Petra, I had a woollen poncho. This was super useful during the early hours. I ventured out before sunrise to make the most of the archaeological park without the crowds, however, in the early hours, the air was still cold. My poncho provided warmth and comfort!

Sunglasses

Wearing sunglasses in Petra and other areas of Jordan served multiple purposes. While the obvious reason is to shield your eyes from the sun, there’s also a sneaky advantage.

The receptionist at my hostel shared a valuable tip: wearing sunglasses, even on slightly cloudy days. She said wearing sunglasses allowed her to discreetly glance sideways without making it obvious where you were looking. She said this helped her avoid any unwanted attention.

Furthermore, sunglasses proved to be a practical accessory in Petra. The sun reflects off every surface. Even during the winter months, the brightness can be intense, making sunglasses a vital accessory to protect your eyes.

What to Wear in Petra as a Male

Pretty much anything goes for what men should wear in Petra. There are no real restrictions on what men should and should not wear. However, because Petra is a ruin site, make sure you’re wearing something practical as there is a lot of walking.

  • Comfortable walking shoes or sturdy sneakers
  • Lightweight and breathable clothing, such as shorts or lightweight pants
  • T-shirts or collared shirts
  • Hat or cap to protect from the sun
  • Sunglasses
  • A lightweight jacket or sweater for cooler evenings
  • A small backpack or daypack to carry essentials (water, snacks, camera, etc.)
  • Consider wearing moisture-wicking clothing to stay dry and comfortable

Although men have free reign and wear what they like, I would advise steering clear of offensive graphics on clothing, such as t-shirts, just to be respectful and mindful of their culture.

What Not to Wear in Petra

You might be wondering what clothes should you pack for your trip. When it comes to clothing in Petra, it is important to be mindful of what you wear.

While you have the freedom to wear what you like in private spaces, I recommended avoiding certain clothing items when out and about, especially if you’re a solo female traveller.

  • Skip the short shorts, hot pants, and mini skirts. These are considered too revealing and inappropriate in Petra, where most people dress conservatively. Opt for longer shorts, pants, or skirts that cover your knees instead.
  • Avoid sheer fabrics that show your underwear. This is also seen as disrespectful and indecent in Petra, where modesty is valued. Choose fabrics that are opaque and comfortable for the weather.
  • Don’t wear tops that expose your belly or back. These are also frowned upon in Petra, where showing too much skin is considered a little inappropriate. Wear tops that cover your midriff and back, and avoid low-cut necklines that show cleavage.
  • Don’t wear clothes that are too tight or clingy. These can attract unwanted attention and make you feel uncomfortable in Petra, where people tend to dress more loosely and casually. Wear clothes that fit well but don’t hug your body too much.

In general, I suggest that it’s best to avoid clothes that expose a lot of skin in Petra. Not only does this protects you from the sun – there isn’t much shade in Petra, but it also shows respect.

You can still dress stylishly and colourfully – but try to keep it modest.

What Shoes to Wear in Petra, Jordan

So, when it comes to what shoes to wear in Petra, understand the importance of wearing practical shoes that are suitable for the terrain and climate

You’ll be doing a ton of walking on uneven surfaces. Therefore comfortable footwear will be important for the most pleasant experience.

In the hot summer months, I opt for breathable shoes to keep my feet cool. Hiking boots and sturdy trainers are excellent choices for exploring Petra. They offer the necessary support and grip the uneven paths in the archaeological site.

I always make sure to break in my shoes before the trip to ensure maximum comfort and minimize the risk of blisters.
