It has a population of approximately 37.8 million people, predominantly Arab and Berber, but with plenty of European influences. The Moroccan people are known for their warm hospitality, when you visit, you’ll definitely experience this first-hand.

Morocco is also a country with imposing natural scenery. It has the Atlas Mountains, the Sahara Desert, and the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts, all within its borders. But that’s not all. Morocco is also famous for its historic Imperial cities, like Marrakech and Fez, which are full of striking architecture and lively markets. 

And don’t forget to try the delicious Moroccan food, like tagine (a stew cooked in a clay pot) and couscous (a type of grain), which are full of flavour and spices!

So yeah, if you were wondering, is a European country or not. No, it’s not.

The countries surrounding Morocco are quite diverse – to the west and north, you’ll find the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea respectively. These expansive bodies of water provide Morocco with a wide array of coastal landscapes.

On its eastern and southeastern borders, Morocco is adjacent to its continental neighbour, Algeria. Further to the south, Morocco borders the contested region of Western Sahara.

• Medinas: Moroccan cities are known for their ancient medinas, or old town centres, filled with labyrinthine alleys, historic architecture, and abundant street life. Marrakech and Fez have particularly famous medinas.

• Riads – These enclosed houses look humble from the outside, but stepping inside is like finding an oasis haven. They often feature pools, shaded palm trees, terraces and fountains and are decorated with intricate plasterwork, ornate lanterns and colourful textiles. I definitely recommend staying at least one night in a traditional Riad to get the full Moroccan experience.

• Imperial Cities: Rabat, Marrakech, Fez, and Meknes are Morocco’s imperial cities, each boasting a unique blend of historical and architectural treasures that reflect the country’s rich past.

• UNESCO Heritage Sites: Morocco boasts several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the medinas of Fez and Marrakech, the archaeological site of Volubilis, and the historic city of Meknes.

Morocco’s location in the northwest corner of Africa is just across the Strait of Gibraltar from Spain. The distance between the two continents is only about 14 kilometres (9 miles) at the narrowest point. 

Several ports in both Morocco and Spain offer ferry services, such as Tangier and Tarifa, or Nador and Almeria. 

You can also fly from many Moroccan cities to various European destinations, such as Casablanca to Paris, or Marrakech to London.
