Planning on Backpacking the World?

Deciding your destination is the first and possibly the most important step when planning a backpacking trip. Your choice will determine the climate, the culture,  as well as costs you’ll face.

When choosing your destination, it’s also important to factor in your personal interests, your budget, and the time you have available.

Some of the most popular backpacking destinations in the world include Southeast Asia, South America, and Europe. These regions offer a mix of affordable costs, rich cultural experiences, diverse landscapes, and well-established backpacker routes.

Remember, backpacking around the world is all about exploration and adventure, so don’t be afraid to step off the beaten path and venture into less frequently visited regions – which can also give you more authentic experiences as well as being cheaper than the tourist hot spots.

13 Best Destinations for Backpacking

When it comes to backpacking the world, there are a few destinations that consistently rise to the top. These locations offer a blend of captivating culture, stunning landscapes, and budget-friendly options that make them particularly appealing to backpackers.

These are namely:

  • Central and South America: Offering a mix of lush rainforests, towering mountains, and vibrant cultures, South America is a backpacker’s dream. Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador are often high on the list of backpackers.
  • Europe: With its abundant history, diverse cultures, and excellent transport links, Europe is perfect for first-time backpackers. Eastern Europe offers particularly good value for money.

Here are my top suggestions on places to go.

1. Thailand

Thailand is the ultimate backpacking destination that comes to mind naturally! With its prime location in Southeast Asia and en route to Australia and the Far East, it’s a backpacker’s paradise. Each year, millions of tourists, digital nomads and TEFL teachers are welcomed to this country, whether they’re heading to the stunning southern islands or exploring the mainland.

Thailand has something for everyone, as long as you don’t mind sharing the experience with fellow backpackers. Get ready for glorious sandy beaches, vibrant nightlife, magnificent monuments, temples, and bustling cities.

If you’re looking for things to do near Bangkok and you’re a fan of ancient temples, I highly suggest exploring Ayutthaya, just a short train ride from Thai capital. Another option is to head to the centre of the country and visit Sukhothai. Both of these places are ancient Siam Kingdoms and UNESCO heritage sites.

If you’re interested in scuba diving, Thailand is also one of the cheapest places to get qualified. I did my Advanced Open Water dive certification on Koh Tao and it was a fraction of the price I would have paid in Australia (where I did my first dive qualification)

Highlights of Backpacking in Thailand

  • Explore Khaosan Road in Bangkok
  • Do adrenalin sports around the jungles and mountains in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai
  • Island hop around Koh Tao, party at Koh Phangan’s Full Moon Party, relax on the serene beaches of Koh Lanta, or explore the lagoons of Phi Phi Islands.
  • Experience a traditional Thai massage
  • Try delicious Thai street food at the night markets
  • Visit the Grand Palace in Bangkok and other stunning temples across the country
  • Immerse yourself in Thai culture and customs by participating in a homestay or volunteering program

2. Spain

Spain is another popular destination for backpackers, thanks to its friendly culture, delicious food, and beautiful landscapes. From the bustling cities of Madrid and Barcelona to the picturesque beaches of the Mediterranean coast, to the culture of the Andalucian capital, Seville, there is something for everyone in this diverse country.

One of the most popular routes is along the south and into the region of Andalucia.  This area is known for its more laid-back approach to life and is home to some of Spain’s most iconic landmarks such as the Alhambra in Granada and the Mezquita in Cordoba.

I’ve explored lots of Spain over the years and it is definitely one of my favourite countries in Europe. Some highlights from backpacking there include:

Highlights of Backpacking in Spain

  • Getting lost in the winding streets of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter
  • Trying delicious tapas like patatas bravas and tortilla de patatas
  • Hiking in the stunning Picos de Europa National Park
  • Relaxing on the beaches of Mallorca and Menorca
  • Visiting the stunning Alhambra in Granada and learning about its fascinating history
  • Enjoying traditional flamenco shows in Seville

3. Croatia

Located on the Adriatic Sea, Croatia has quickly become a top destination for backpackers. With its beautiful beaches, charming old towns and stunning national parks, it’s not hard to see why.

One of the most popular routes for backpacking in Croatia is along the Dalmatian coast from Split to Dubrovnik. Along the way, you’ll find picturesque islands, like Hvar and Korcula, and plenty of opportunities for island hopping.

I’ve visited Croatia several times and as much as I love Dubrovnik – it does get insanely busy. Some of my best experiences in Croatia have been when I’ve gotten off the beaten track. The countryside and adventure spots scene here is excellent.

Highlights of Backpacking in Croatia

  • Exploring the ancient Roman ruins in Split’s Old Town
  • Island hopping to some of the most beautiful islands in Europe
  • Swimming at the stunning Krka National Park waterfalls
  • Visiting the old town of Dubrovnik and walking along its famous city walls

4. Greece

Greece is the ultimate backpacking destination. With its ancient history, beautiful islands, delicious food and friendly locals, Greece has something for everyone.

The most popular route for backpacking in Greece is through the Greek Islands Starting from Athens, travellers can island hop – by either a mini cruise or on a ferry to explore some of the most stunning islands, such as Santorini, Mykonos, and Corfu. However, during peak season, these islands come with a hefty price tag – so I strongly advise visiting in the shoulder or off-season to make your backpacker bucks go further.

As a huge fan of ancient ruins Greece was a haven for me. It’s home to some of the most famous historical sites in the world, such as the Acropolis in Athens and the Parthenon temple.

Highlights of Backpacking in Greece

  • Eating your weight in Greek food
  • Explore the Acropolis and other ancient ruins
  • Watch the sunset over Oia in Santorini – known as one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world.
  • Island hop around the stunning Greek Islands
  • Soaking up the sun and swimming in crystal clear waters on the beautiful beaches of Mykonos or Crete

5. Australia

Although not the cheapest on this list, Australia is still one of the most famous backpacking destinations and certainly worthy of mention. I chose Australia as my first backpacking destination as it ticked every box I was after; adventure and wildlife, plus the added bonus, for my first backpacking adventure I opted for somewhere with no language barrier.

This huge continental country is known for its crazy wildlife, stunning beaches, and vast outback. The most popular route follows the east coast from Melbourne in the south to Cairns looking out over the Great Barrier Reef. With a variety of options when it comes to getting a visa for Australia from the UK, you can stay for a few weeks, months or even years if you wish.

The country is well connected and I go around with a mix of coach, train, and sharing a campervan with friends I’d met at Dive School. You can also opt to fly between destinations if you’re travelling from one coast to another or are pushed for time.

Highlights of Backpacking in Australia

  • Snorkelling or diving in the Great Barrier Reef
  • Exploring the vibrant cities of Sydney and Melbourne
  • Road tripping along the famous Great Ocean Road
  • Camping under the stars in the outback
  • Visiting Uluru (Ayers Rock), one of Australia’s most iconic landmarks
  • Getting up close and personal with kangaroos, koalas and other unique Australian wildlife
  • Surfing in some of the world’s best surf spots along the coast

6. The Baltic States

Located in Northern Europe, the Baltic States consist of three countries – Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

They often get overlooked as a great place for backpacking – and I don’t know why. They are outstanding! The capitals of these nations are also compact, so you could easily visit Tallinn, Vilnius or Riga in a weekend.

The three countries are well connected by public transport, making it easy to hop from one to the other. Each country has its own unique culture and history, with beautiful old towns, castles and museums to explore.

Some of my highlights include wandering through the cobblestone streets of Tallinn in Estonia, taking in the art nouveau architecture in Riga, Latvia and exploring the medieval town of Vilnius in Lithuania.

The Baltic States are also abundant with outdoor activities such as hiking, camping and kayaking in the beautiful nature reserves that these countries have to offer.

Must-see places in the Baltic States:

  • The UNESCO listed fairytale-like Old Towns of Tallinn (Estonia), Riga (Latvia) and Vilnius (Lithuania)
  • The picturesque golden sandy beaches
  • The historic Hill of Crosses in Lithuania
  • Taking a traditional sauna experience in Estonia
  • Exploring the Soviet-era history

7. Indonesia

Comprised of over 17,000 islands, Indonesia is a diverse and vibrant country in Southeast Asia. It has something for every type of traveller – from pristine beaches and world-renowned diving sites to ancient temples, bustling cities and lush rainforests.

Although most people head to Bali, there’s a lot more to Indonesia than this one island. Some of my highlights in Indonesia were exploring the temples of Borudobur on Java Island, doing a jungle trek to see the Orangutans on Sumatra Island and to the Komodo Islands to see the infamous Komodo dragons.

It also offers outstanding scuba diving opportunities – I ticked off a bucket list goal of mine when I went swimming with manta rays.

Highlights of Backpacking in Indonesia:

  • The stunning Gili Islands for snorkelling and beach relaxation
  • Volcanoes – Indonesia has over 100 active volcanoes, with Mount Bromo being a popular hiking spot
  • Komodo National Park, home to the famous Komodo dragons
  • Traditional Balinese culture and cuisine
  • Ubud for its beautiful rice terraces, yoga retreats and art

8. New Zealand

Similarly to Australia, New Zealand isn’t the cheapest destination – but it’s still a great place for backpacking.

Located off the southeast coast of Australia lies the extraordinary country of New Zealand. Split into the North and South Island, it has a tremendous indigenous Māori culture which is still held in high esteem by the nation. It’s a relatively small country when compared to neighbouring Australia, but many argue there’s much more to offer backpackers.

The North Island has many of the main cities including Auckland and Wellington, while the South Island has some of the more spectacular scenery. On a backpacking trip, you can explore the set of Hobbiton from the Lord of the Rings movies, embrace Māori cultures and trek around staggering wilderness and mountain ranges.

Highlights of Backpacking in New Zealand:

  • Milford Sound, a breathtaking fiord in the South Island
  • Queenstown for adrenaline-filled activities such as bungee jumping and skydiving
  • The Tongariro Alpine Crossing, one of New Zealand’s best day hikes
  • Glacier hiking and ice climbing on the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers
  • Rotorua for its geothermal wonders and Maori cultural experiences

9. Morocco

Located in the northeast corner of Africa, Morocco offers a fantastic and unique blend of Arabic, Berber, and European influences.

The bustling medinas of Marrakech and Fez as well as the stunning Sahara Desert right at the front door, are all popular amongst backpackers – and we haven’t even mentioned the stunning Atlas Mountains yet.

Although Morocco can feel a little haphazard compared to the ease of backpacking in Europe and Asia, it’s certainly an experience.   The people are friendly, the food is delicious, and there’s plenty to see and do.

If you’re not sure what to do in Morocco, you could end up doing everything from haggling in the markets, watching stars in the desert, or sipping mint tea on a rooftop terrace – travel throughout Morocco will surely leave its mark on you. I can’t wait to go back!

Highlights of Backpacking in Morocco:

  • Exploring the colourful and chaotic medinas of Marrakech and Fez
  • Trekking through the stunning Atlas Mountains and visiting traditional Berber villages
  • Camping under the stars in the Sahara Desert
  • Visiting ancient ruins such as Volubilis, a well-preserved Roman city
  • Trying delicious Moroccan cuisine

10. Vietnam

Located on the easternmost part of the Indochinese Peninsula in Southeast Asia, Vietnam is a backpacker’s paradise. With plenty of history – some of it harrowing, stunning landscapes, and delicious food, it’s no wonder that Vietnam has become one of the most popular destinations for budget travellers.

Vietnam is easy to get to from other popular destinations in Southeast Asia – I travelled from Thailand, took the bus to Cambodia, stopped to explore Cambodia for a week, and then continued on to Vietnam, starting at the bottom of the country and working my way up north.

Highlights of Backpacking in Vietnam:

  • Exploring the bustling cities of Ho Chi Minh City (formerly known as Saigon) and Hanoi
  • Cruising through the beautiful Halong Bay with its limestone islands and emerald waters
  • Visiting ancient temples, such as Po Nagar Cham Towers in Nha Trang
  • Trekking through Sapa, a picturesque town in the mountains inhabited by various

11. Peru

Peru is a country in South America that offers a diverse range of experiences for backpackers. From ancient ruins and colonial cities to stunning natural wonders such as the Andes Mountains and the Amazon Rainforest.

Backpacking through Peru is an affordable way to explore this beautiful country, and there are plenty of budget-friendly options for accommodations, transportation, and food.

The main attraction for backpackers is definitely hiking the Inca Trail to the ancient city of Machu Picchu – a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most iconic trekking destinations in the world. I had wanted to do this trek for as long as I can remember, and although thought at times with hiking at altitude, it’s 100% worth it.

Highlights of Backpacking in Peru:

  • Exploring the vibrant capital city of Cusco, with its colonial architecture and amazing food scene
  • Hiking through the Colca Canyon – one of the deepest canyons in the world and home to Andean condors
  • Hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
  • Take a plane flight over the mystical Nazca Lines
  • Go sandboarding in the desert oasis of Huaccina
  • Stay in a jungle lodge in the Amazon Jungle and track wildlife

12. Colombia

Speaking of South America – just a bit further north we can find Colombia, which has become a hot destination for backpackers due to its diverse geography and culture.

Here, bustling and stunning cities like Medellín and Bogotá can be explored – or simply relaxed on the beautiful Caribbean coast, before heading out into the lush Amazon Rainforest, or jump to the Pacific side where you can experience humpback whale watching.

The friendly locals, affordability and truly delicious coffee only add to its appeal. Excellent hiking opportunities can be found in the Cocora Valley, home to Colombia’s national tree, the wax palm.

Highlights of Backpacking in Colombia:

  • The bustling and vibrant cities of Medellín and Bogotá or colourful Guatape
  • Relaxing on the picturesque Caribbean coast, including a visit to Tayrona National Park
  • Exploring the Amazon Rainforest and tracking wildlife
  • Watching humpback whales in their natural habitat on the Pacific side
  • Take a coffee tour in Medellín to learn about Colombian coffee

13. Guatemala

Located in Central America, Guatemala boasts an abundance of history and natural beauty. Its diverse landscape includes volcanic peaks, lush rainforests, and beautiful lakes. Backpackers can explore ancient t Mayan ruins such as Tikal, or hike up the active volcano Pacaya.

For adventure seekers, there are opportunities for white-water rafting and zip-lining through the jungle. The colonial city of Antigua is a popular stop, known for its colourful streets and delicious cuisine.

While you’re interested in what’s under the waves and you’re visiting Guatemala, then I recommend hopping over to neighbouring Belize. There are so many great opportunities for scuba diving in Belize from beginner level through to advanced. See tropical fish, titles, reef sharks and of course the iconic Great Blue Hole – the world’s largest underwater sinkhole!

I spent a month backpacking around Guatemala, and to date, it’s one of my top places to visit. Compared to the well-trodden path of Southeast Asia, I found it was still relatively unexplored – true, getting to some parts of the country did need a lot of planning, but it was all part of the adventure especially if you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure.

Highlights of Backpacking in Guatemala:

  • Exploring ancient Mayan ruins such as Tikal
  • Hiking up the active volcano Pacaya
  • White-water rafting and zip-lining through the lush rainforest
  • Visiting the colourful colonial city of Antigua and trying traditional cuisine
  • Admiring the breathtaking views from Lake Atitlan
